Five Faculty Positions in ISEEE’s Energy and Environmental Systems Group, University of Calgary The Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE) at the University of Calgary develops cost-effective solutions to the environmental challenges of energy production and use. Within ISEEE, the Energy and Environmental Systems Group (EES) is the Institute’s interdisciplinary research and teaching unit. EES is Canada’s strongest centre for applied policy-focused research at the energy-environment interface. We are recruiting for five (5) faculty positions, each of which would be cross-appointed between ISEEE and a home department or Faculty. With this group of new faculty, the University of Calgary aims to build upon a deep and growing pool of applied energy-environment expertise on campus. These new positions will be an integral part of a core group of scholars, researchers and students who will work together to design solutions to the most important environmental problems associated with energy production and use. Ideal candidates will combine a strong disciplinary background in science, social science or engineering, with a drive to conduct interdisciplinary, problem-driven and policy-relevant analysis at the energy-environment interface. ISEEE’s work focuses on four priority areas: 1) low-emission hydrocarbon recovery and processing; 2) North American energy systems 2030+; 3) Sustainable energy development in the Arctic; and 4) low-carbon communities. Position Requirements We are seeking candidates whose applied research interests include, but need not be limited to: • Carbon dioxide capture and storage • Technical and economic assessment of low-carbon technologies • Innovation and diffusion of energy technologies • Energy economics, markets and regulation • Risk and decision analysis • Future energy systems All applicants must have a completed PhD (or within 3-6 months of their doctoral thesis defense), and potential and/or demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Successful candidates will have teaching responsibilities in the new interdisciplinary graduate program in Energy and Environmental Systems, supervise graduate students in this program, and build a vigorous research portfolio. Positions available include the Svare Chair in Energy Systems and four tenure track positions that we expect to fill with a mixture of faculty ranks (assistant, associate and full professor) commensurate with qualifications and experience. In addition to the five positions, there are a limited number of chair and other senior positions available in specific departments. Advertisements for specific positions under this recruiting drive will be posted on an ongoing basis at www.ucalgary.ca/EES/jobs along with specific application instructions. Applicants should direct inquiries or expressions of interest, including a cover letter, CV, research and teaching statements to eesgjobs@ucalgary.ca All hiring, promotion and tenure decisions will be made in collaboration with the applicant’s home department/Faculty. Evaluation of applications will commence on May 1, 2009 and will continue until suitable candidates are found. All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply. Canadian citizens and permanent residents will receive priority. The University of Calgary respects, appreciates and honours diversity.
