U of C's Contribution

The ACWA dedicated research facility at the Pine Creek Research Centre will have a capacity of two million litres per day and side-by-side experimental and control channels that replicate a river environment.

Researchers will develop new processes and novel treatment technologies that will optimize existing treatment plants, and allow engineers to cost effectively build and operate new facilities that safeguard public health and the environment.

The Alberta Ingenuity Centre for Water Research will focus on four main research areas: (1) the impact of human activities on watersheds (2) water ecology and the health of freshwater ecosystems (3) safety of drinking water and wastewater treatment (4) the economics, policy and risk of water management.

The centre will advance our understanding of the underlying physical and biological processes of freshwater, and of the human uses and impacts within Alberta. Researchers will develop decision-making tools that will assist Albertans to more effectively manage the province’s finite freshwater resources.
