Ministers meet researchers and students
Cutting-edge research and teaching on energy and the environment was on display at the University of Calgary for members of the Government of Alberta Cabinet who spent Tuesday morning on campus.
Alberta Energy Minister Ted Morton and Service Alberta Minister Manmeet Bhullar visited the Catalysis for Bitumen Upgrading lab in the In-Situ Energy Centre, watched a demonstration of 3-D oil reservoir visualization in the Foundation CMG/Frank and Sarah Meyer Collaboration Centre and observed engineering students learn industry techniques in the Trican Petroleum Engineering Laboratory in the EEEL building. The ministers then had the chance to see the Schulich Axiom solar car and meet students from the university’s Solar Team, Solar Decathlon Team and iGEM Team who showed off their most recent engineering and design projects.
“For several years, the Alberta government has taken the opportunity to go out and meet Albertans and see first-hand the talented people and innovative spirit we have in this province,” Bhullar said. “Visits like this are incredibly valuable because they help us consider diverse viewpoints when we make decisions for the province as a Cabinet team.”
The tour was part of province-wide visits to communities across Alberta led by Premier Alison Redford this week. The University of Calgary visit focused on work being done at the university to help the energy industry operate more efficiently and to train the next generation of scientists, engineers and business leaders.
“We are proud to have the opportunity to showcase the world-class research work being done here to drive innovation in energy research and teaching–which is a key public policy area for the province and has a direct impact on the economy of Calgary, Alberta and Canada,” President Elizabeth Cannon said.
