Alignment with U of C’s Academic Plan

ISEEE is designed to foster and facilitate the integrative, collaborative, multidisciplinary and mission-oriented approach needed to unlock the huge economic and environmental benefits from advancing sustainable energy, environment and the economy.

ISEEE is anchored by the areas of prominence and promise, and by the institutional goals set out in the University of Calgary’s academic plan, Raising Our Sights.jAs noted in this plan, “Leading in Innovation in Energy and Environment” is a strategic priority and the University is committed to further building its research excellence in this area.

ISEEE’s multidisciplinary approach, innovation-based research and targeted educational programs are aligned with the Government of Alberta's Energy Innovation Strategy, being led by the Alberta Energy Research Institute (AERI).

ISEEE is closely aligned with Memorandum of Understanding among AERI, the University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Lethbridge to promote coordination and collaboration in research and education related to the implementation of Alberta’s energy and environmental strategies. ISEEE is also aligned with the federal Innovation Agenda.

AERI, established in August, 2000 by the Government of Alberta, provides leadership and strategic direction to position Alberta for the future of energy development. lAERI’s comprehensive energy strategy is designed to lead and support the transformation of key sectors of Alberta’s economy – such as oil and gas, coal, petrochemical and alternative energy – into an integrated energy industry, while ensuring clean air, water and land.

We need to significantly increase research, innovation and education funding to take advantage of opportunities in areas like in situ recovery and upgrading of oil sands, increased recovery of conventional oil, the enormous potential for non-conventional gas, and alternative energy sources. ISEEE is designed to tap these opportunities.
